While going home Mildred and Robbie, who is still traumatized by his sister's horrific death, shouts at his mother for the billboards, as they only make him more upset and angry. Chief Willoughby asks Dixon to let her go. She runs to get help and he is taken to the hospital. She disagrees and says I haven’t done it, the doctor slipped and hurt his thumb.ĭuring her interrogation, Chief Willoughby accidentally coughs blood in Mildred's face and apologies promptly for it. Chief Willoughby goes to the shop where Mildred works and brings her to the station for questioning for the incident. She goes there for a check-up and grabs the drill from his hand and runs it through Geoffrey's thumb. The next morning after two people issue complaints over the billboards, Mildred visits one of them, a dentist named Geoffrey (Played by Jerry Winsett).

Montgomery supports her on what happened to her daughter but doesn’t support her acts on billboards, an argument breaks out and she warns him to get out of her home. As Montgomery tries to lecture Mildred, she brings up a point over some ads that ran a while back about people who were culpable by association with gangs if their friends did anything wrong, which she compares to people from church being culpable when one of them goes around sexually harassing young boys. He tells Mildred that Robbie told him how other kids at school are giving him problems for the billboards. Late on Mildred goes home to find her son Robbie, sitting at the table with Father Montgomery (Played Nick Searcy). As Dixon opposes Mildred, and warns her to take back the billboards and not to give such kind of interviews as his mother watches them too, she is defended by a local car dealer named James (Played by Peter Dinklage), who tells her she looked good on TV. That night Mildred is at a pool hall where drunk Dixon is trying to get in Red's face for allowing the billboards to go up. He understands Mildred's anger, but also mentions to her that he is dying of pancreatic cancer. Still he had no proofs and eyewitnesses for the case. Later on Chief Willoughby goes to meet Mildred, and informs her he tried his level bestto find the rapist and had put lots of efforts to solve the case. After seeing the interview everyone gets to know that Mildred is the one who has put up the billboards. As the police is in front of Red’s Advertising agency, Dixon tries to beat Red but Chief Willoughby stops him. She is trying to challenge the Ebbing Police Department, especially Chief Willoughby, into doing their jobs instead of harassing innocent people.ĭesk Sergeant (Played by Zeljko Ivanek) asks Red about the billboards and who has put them, but Red doesn’t tell them about it, they try to scare him but he handles it well, as well as Chief Willoughby tries to unravel who is behind the billboards, he just gets to know there is a woman behind it.

Mildred even goes on live TV during a broadcast to explain her reasoning for putting up the billboards. As Mildred goes to her work place there her colleague Denise (Played by Amanda Warren) supports her decision.

The billboards receive a lot of attention throughout town and people believe it to be a personal attack against Chief Willoughby. Robbie gets upsets by this act but doesn’t say anything about it. The next morning Mildred and her son Robbie (Played by Lucas Hedges) pass by the billboard. Dixon passes the second billboard that says "And still no arrests?" He goes to read the last billboard, which says "Raped while dying".ĭixon calls Chief Bill Willoughby (Played by Woody Harrelson) as he's having dinner with his wife Anne (Played by Abbie Cornish) and daughters Polly and Jane to inform him about the billboards. Later at night, Officer Jason Dixon (Played Sam Rockwell), who has a reputation of harassing African-American citizens, is driving down Drinkwater Road and listening to music, when he sees two young men putting up the first billboard that reads "How come, Chief Willoughby?". Red agrees to put up the advertisement by Sunday. Red figures out Mildred is the mother of Angela Hayes (Played by Kathryn Newton), who was raped and murdered seven months earlier.

Mildred gives five thousand rent for the first month and says no one should put advertisement in place of hers. As she passes by three vacant billboards, she stops and bites her nails, comes up with a plan and then goes to an advertising agency to speak to Red Welby (Played by Caleb Landry Jones) about putting up three billboards for a year and want to know the rent for the billboards.
